Since being conceived on a vineyard on the edge of the South Downs National Park we’ve always been mindful of our obligations to the local environment. Passionate about reducing our carbon footprint we have pledged to be a carbon negative business as soon as possible and have implemented a number of initiatives as part of our core value; Better Planet.
We are proud members of 1% for the planet and donate 1% of our annual sales to local environmental and social causes. 1% for the Planet was founded by Patagonia to prevent green washing through certifying reputable giving and provide accountability. We are committed to producing beers in the most eco-friendly way possible and why we use renewable energy to make our beers. Our eco-brewery is powered by solar panels to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and help mitigate climate change.
Did you know that it takes on average five pints of water to make one pint of beer! This is why we’re passionate about reusing as much of the water that we use as possible.
Rather than pour our brewery wastewater down the drain we pay for it to be taken away for aerobic treatment; a process where bacteria use oxygen to degrade organic matter and other pollutants. This process separates out the treated wastewater which can be safely re-used.
With a brewery located on a beautiful farm we are passionate about our local environment and donate all our juicy spent grain to the cows on the farm immediately after every brew – talk about zero waste miles!
We are committed to recycling and have programmes in place to recycle everything we can at the brewery and we’re passionate that the packaging used for our beers is also recycled by our drinkers. Whilst the way in which our packaging gets to recycling facilities differs by council, we are pleased to confirm that nearly 100% of all our cans, bottles, mini kegs and cardboard are recycled, ie nothing is sent to landfill. We will continue to monitor and improve this further whenever and wherever we can. CHILL.ENJOY.RECYCLE.
To further offset our carbon footprint and as part of our pledge to be carbon negative, we are proud members of Forest Carbon and invest in a regulated scheme of woodland creation and peatland restoration to offset 100% of our annual carbon footprint. Forest Carbon lead the way in woodland creation for carbon capture and since 2006 have planted 13 million new trees and offset over 3 million tonnes of CO2 from the atmosphere. Visit www.forestcarbon.co.uk for more information.
We have identified the largest contributors to our carbon footprint and are reviewing the following:
We will report back on progress regarding the above, so keep checking back for further details or sign up to our newsletters.
Our commitment to a Better Planet is an evolution but one that is part of our core values and something we are all fully committed to.
